Depending on the purpose for which a ship is constructed it will have certain innate benefits and restrictions compared to ships constructed for different purposes – for example it could be a purpose-built bulk carrier, a research vessel, an aero-transport, or an interstellar warship, all of which have very different design requirements.
Select one Design Edge during construction. Apply Modifications; this does not require spending any Cpubits. The Design Edge can never change, although a starship could be re-tasked to fulfill other roles.
Design Edges Table
Design Edge Modifications Payload* Hardpoints*
Warship +1 Quality die-type, -3 Pace 1 2
Research +1 Computer die-type, +1 Hindrance(Minor) 2 0
Exploration +1 Drive die-type, +1 Pace 2 1
Cargo +1 Displacement die-type, -4 Pace, +1 Hindrance 3 0
Liner +1 Quality die-type 3 0
Sporting +1 Maneuver die-type 0.5 1
*Per Displacement die-type. For example, a warship with d6 Displacement has 6 Payload, and 12 Hardpoints.
Design Edges can affect the starting Attributes of a starship. The Design Edge also affects the minimum and maximum die-type for that same Attribute. For example, if a modification indicates +1 Quality die-type, then the starting Quality (costing 100CBT) for that starship is d6, and the maximum Quality is d12+2. Conversely, a modification of -1 Quality die-tie means that the starting Quality is d4-2, and the maximum Quality die-type is d10.
